Murder of Crows
Jennie Duke, 2025

In thinking about what Marlborough apples represent to me I realized that in Autumn there is a phenomenon that is notable.

Thousands of crows descend on the orchards. Flocks of crows are called "murders". So these Murders of Crows gather in the orchards and every evening at dusk they rise up and fly across the Hudson River, where they roost in trees near the train station. It is an amazing thing to see every night for months. I am told they are seeking light and warmth. The concept of incorporating autumn colors with the black lattice of the apple tree branches and the crow's feathers appealed to me.
